Location

Stillwater is known as the “birthplace of Minnesota” with early settlements preceding statehood by more than 30 years, followed by official incorporation as a city in 1854, making it the largest city in the state of its time.

At the height of the log boom, Stillwater’s lumber mills produced thousands of rail cars of timber, primarily white and Norway pines. This made Stillwater famous in the lumber industry. Due to its river connections to the northern Minnesota and Wisconsin pine lands, still waters for assembling rafts, and water power, Stillwater had all the necessary components for a successful lumbering town. As a result, Minnesota became one of the world’s largest lumber markets, with the Stillwater Lumber Company as one of the country’s largest lumber mills.

The Historic Lift Bridge, built in 1931 and connecting Minnesota and Wisconsin, remains one of the few still in operation in the country today. In recent years, our lift bridge remains active as a pedestrian and cycling bridge integrated into the St Croix River Crossing Loop Trail.

Today Stillwater remains a top Minnesota destination city for weddings, honeymoons, vacations, and events, mixing its rich history with new and exciting experiences. The city has restored historic mansions, over 100 locally-owned shops and restaurants downtown, 20+ outdoor dining patios, historic sites, wineries and breweries, paddlewheel cruises, antiques, museums, art galleries, and music. There are few places that boast such a passionate community for all things old and new, and we welcome you to join in on the fun!
